Run and Be Safe: Mixed-Criticality Scheduling with Temporary Processor Speedup

چکیده

Mixed-Criticality systems are arising due to the push from several major industries including avionics and automotive, where functionalities with different safety criticality levels are integrated into a modern computing platform to reduce size, weight and energy. The state-of-the-art research has focused on protecting critical tasks under the threat of task overrun, which is achieved by killing less critical tasks or degrading their services to free system resources to guarantee critical tasks. We take in this paper a different approach to protecting critial tasks by embracing rich features of modern computing platforms. In particular, we explore dynamic processor speedup to aid the scheduling of mixed-criticality systems. We show that speedup in situation of overrun can not only help to protect the timeliness of critical tasks, but also to improve the degraded services for less critical tasks. Furthermore, we show that speedup is even more attractive as it can help the system to recover faster to normal operation. Thus, speedup could only be temporarily required and incur low cost. The proposed techniques are validated by both theoretical analysis and experimental results with an industrial flight management system and extensive simulations.

Mixed-Criticality Scheduling of Sporadic Task Systems

We consider the scheduling of mixed-criticality task systems, that is, systems where each task to be scheduled has multiple levels of worst-case execution time estimates. We design a scheduling algorithm, EDF-VD, whose effectiveness we analyze using the processor speedup metric: we show that any 2-level task system that is schedulable on a unit-speed processor is correctly scheduled by EDF-VD u...

Mixed-criticality Scheduling: Improved Resource-augmentation Results

Many safety-critical embedded systems are subject to certification requirements; some systems may be required to meet multiple sets of certification requirements, from different certification authorities. Certification requirements in such “mixed-criticality” systems give rise to some interesting scheduling problems, that cannot be satisfactorily addressed using techniques from conventional sch...

Global mixed-criticality scheduling on multiprocessors

The scheduling of mixed-criticality implicit-deadline sporadic task systems on identical multiprocessor platforms is considered, when inter-processor migration is permitted. A scheduling algorithm is derived and proved correct, and its properties investigated. Theoretical analysis (in the form of both a speedup factor and sufficient schedulability conditions) as well as extensive simulation exp...

Mixed Criticality Systems: Beyond Transient Faults

Adopting mixed-criticality architectures enable safe sharing of computational resources between tasks of different criticalities consequently leading to reduced Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) requirements. A majority of the research in mixed-criticality systems focuses on scheduling tasks whose Worst Case Execution Times (WCETs) are certified to varying levels of assurances. If any given task ov...

Implementing Mixed-criticality Systems Upon a Preemptive Varying-speed Processor

A mixed criticality (MC) workload consists of components of varying degrees of importance (or “criticalities”); the more critical components typically need to have their correctness validated to greater levels of assurance than the less critical ones. The problem of executing such a MC workload upon a preemptive processor whose effective speed may vary during run-time, in a manner that is not c...
